Choose Your Own Ashmolean Adventure: Stories in Stone

This isn’t an ordinary virtual museum experience. While you will learn about various objects, what is important here is what they mean for you: How do they make you feel? What do they make you think?

We invite you on a journey across cultures and through time to explore the Ashmolean Museum’s collection. Your adventure begins in front of the Assyrian reliefs. Imagine that you are on the threshold of the Assyrian palace. What will you do? Do you go inside? Do you turn around? Make a choice, see where it leads you.

At each point in your journey you will discover a new object, and then face a choice about which direction you want to go in next. There are eight possible journeys to choose from, and it’s up to you which way you go. Every journey starts with the Assyrian reliefs and every ending somehow relates to them. Can you find the connections?

Stories in Stone was developed as part of an experimental project called Object Affinity. Each object page was put together by a different person and expresses their research interests and personal experience. We invite you to take part in the ongoing storytelling by adding links to images, videos, and text that are meaningful for you. What do these objects mean for you? What kind of questions do these objects provoke? What is the contemporary value of old stones?

This website is a work in progress. Over the coming months we will continue to add material and features to enhance the digital experience.
